Atari Flashback 2

by Howard Wen

As seen in MAKE 05 Toolbox

The first Atari Flashback retro-game unit was a disappointment. Worst of all, its processor was similar to that of -- blasphemy! -- the Nintendo Entertainment System's. Thank the gaming gods, the Atari Flashback 2 gets it right. Not only does it look like a smaller version of the 2600, its internals recreate the 2600 processor, and its classic joysticks actually work better than the originals (using modern-day circuitry).

The Flashback 2 comes with 40 built-in games -- including old-time favorites Adventure, Missile Command and Yar's Revenge, a few Activision titles, and brand-new games made specifically for the Flashback 2. Though it doesn't come with a cartridge slot, plans detailing how to add one have been released on the web. The fact that you can mod the Flashback 2 to re-use your old Atari 2600 cartridges is its coolest feature of all.
